The Passage — Raja Ampat’s Unique Underwater River

The Passage defies every expectation of what a tropical dive site should be. This narrow strait between Waigeo and Gam islands creates an environment unlike anything else in the marine world — an underwater river where tidal currents flow between mangrove-lined banks, carrying divers past walls draped in soft corals of extraordinary color and density. Diving The Passage feels like entering another world entirely, one where freshwater meets salt, jungle meets reef, and the boundaries between terrestrial and marine ecosystems dissolve into something wholly unique.

An Underwater Environment Like No Other

The channel narrows to less than 20 meters in places, with mangrove roots reaching down from banks just above the waterline. Tidal flows push through this constriction with enough force to create gentle currents that deliver nutrients, supporting soft coral growth of remarkable density on the channel walls. At shallow depths of 5-12 meters, these walls glow with reds, oranges, and purples in the dappled light filtering through the overhanging jungle canopy.

The freshwater influence from jungle runoff creates unusual conditions — reduced salinity in the upper water column, dissolved tannins lending an amber tint reminiscent of jungle rivers, and species compositions that include both marine and brackish-water organisms. This transition zone ecology produces marine life combinations found nowhere else in Raja Ampat, including unusual sponge formations, unique tunicate colonies, and mangrove root communities supporting juvenile reef fish nurseries.

What You’ll Experience

Soft Coral Walls

The channel walls support soft coral coverage rivaling any deep-water wall dive — but at depths of just 5-12 meters. Dendronephthya colonies in vivid pink, orange, red, and purple create continuous color carpets. The shallow depth and close proximity to the walls makes photography exceptionally rewarding.

Mangrove Ecosystem

The overhanging mangrove canopy creates a jungle-meets-ocean atmosphere unique to this site. Mangrove root systems visible beneath the surface harbor juvenile fish, shrimp species, and marine organisms adapted to the brackish interface. The atmospheric light filtering through leaves adds a magical quality.

Unique Marine Life

Species adapted to The Passage’s specific conditions include archerfish (that spit water at insects on overhanging branches), needlefish, juvenile reef fish using mangrove nurseries, and walking sharks (epaulette sharks) that patrol the shallows during night dives. Nudibranchs and flatworms in unusual varieties populate the walls.

Atmospheric Experience

Beyond specific species, The Passage offers an atmospheric experience unmatched in tropical diving. The narrow channel, overhanging vegetation, dappled light, gentle current carrying you through, and sense of exploring a hidden waterway between island interiors creates an adventure feeling that transcends typical reef diving.
