An Honest Operator's Guide
We don't profit more if you dive. We profit equally if you snorkel. This matters because we can tell you the truth without financial bias.
Snorkeling delivers 85% of the experience. Diving adds the remaining 15%
Based on 3,000+ snorkelers and 5,000+ divers hosted since 2014
The 85%
Cape Kri hosts 200+ fish species in the top 5 meters alone. Angelfish, parrotfish, trevally, fusiliers, sweetlips, batfish, wrasses — the color density is overwhelming. This isn't marine life — it's a cathedral of color.
At 4 meters you observe reef fish behaviour: parrotfish scraping coral and excreting sand, gobies hovering in burrows, wrasses hunting crustaceans. Behavioural ecology accessible without training.
Colour Advantage
Snorkeling = true colour. At depth, water absorbs red and orange light. Snorkelers see colours a diver at 15m cannot — the full spectrum that makes Raja Ampat photographs extraordinary.
Large Animals at Surface
Manta rays in shallow channels. Turtles at 3-6m. Octopuses in crevices. Blacktip and wobbegong sharks at 6-8m. Whale sharks feeding at surface (seasonal). All visible from snorkel.
What You'll Miss
Anything below 7m. Deep wrecks, pelagic sharks at 20m+, cave systems, night diving, drift diving. Roughly 15-20% of documented species. You're not missing essential beauty — you're missing specialised depth-dependent species.
The Other 15%
12-25m
Manta rays hunting mid-water, barracuda formations, Napoleon wrasses at 15m. Occasional hammerheads and coordinated reef shark hunting at Blue Magic.
15-35m
Japanese destroyer Asagao — superstructure, gun decks, interior passages. Now an artificial reef supporting corals, fish colonies, and octopuses.
8-12m
Pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, crustaceans in dim coral crevices. A hidden ecosystem revealed with lights and lenses that snorkeling can't access.
After Dark
Nocturnal hunting, bioluminescence, sleeping fish, walking sharks. Unique behavioural ecology entirely inaccessible from the surface.
The Intangible
Suspended at 20 metres in clear water with zero visual reference. You're genuinely underwater — not standing-in-water. Meditative, humbling, transcendent. The difference between viewing a painting from a gallery and standing inside it.

Know Yourself
Verdict: Snorkeling with our staff. We offer non-swimmer instruction (3 hours). 99% of non-swimmers can snorkel safely with support. Diving not recommended unless willing to invest in full OW certification.
Verdict: Hybrid approach. Snorkel days 1-4, get OW certified on-site, dive days 5-7. Experience both modalities in a single expedition. Many luxury travellers take this approach.
Verdict: Refresh dive (2 hours). We'll re-equip your skills before full expedition diving. Muscle memory returns quickly. 10+ years lapsed may need re-certification.
Verdict: Diving every day. Custom deeper sites, wreck penetration, technical configurations. Our 50+ vessel fleet reaches locations beyond standard recreational limits.
Verdict: Both proceed simultaneously. Divers do 2-3 dives daily. Snorkelers do snorkel sites and activities. Evenings together. Zero compromise. Children can snorkel from age 5, junior dive certification from age 10.
The Real Difference
Snorkeling
Observation
Floating above a system, watching it unfold. Visitor on the surface. Viewing a painting from a gallery.
Diving
Immersion
Suspended within the system, surrounded by it. Breathing underwater. Standing inside the painting.
Neither is inherently superior. Both are profound. The difference is sensory intensity and psychological state. Know yourself. Choose accordingly.
Honest Answers
No. We've had guests snorkel the full 7 days and report transcendent satisfaction. The reef at 5 metres is stunning. If you're not pushing toward wreck exploration or night diving, snorkeling is complete. 100+ guests yearly choose snorkeling with us — zero regrets.
Yes. Mixed days are common. Diving after snorkeling requires only a normal 30-minute surface interval. Reverse order (diving then snorkeling) is fine too. Many guests alternate daily based on energy and interest.
Physically, yes — you're carrying 15kg of gear. Mentally, yes — constant monitoring of air, depth, buddy, pressure. Psychologically, some find it overwhelming; others find it liberating. Try it before committing to a full 7-day dive expedition.
Happens in roughly 2% of cases. If you complete one certified dive and confirm diving isn't for you, we credit 50% of the diving differential fee toward additional snorkel days. We won't force you deeper.
Diving if you're serious — underwater housings work better at 15m with controlled positioning. Snorkeling if you have a GoPro or iPhone — action camera snorkeling footage is gorgeous and technically superior to consumer camera diving shots. Snorkeling also captures true colour that diving misses.
Diving carries a ~15% premium over snorkeling reflecting actual operational costs: dive master payroll, tank maintenance, compressor rental, dive computers, oxygen certification, and increased liability insurance. We pass savings to snorkelers — no margin inflation.
Your Way
Whether snorkel or dive, we'll design your perfect itinerary. We host both modalities with equal investment and care. We won't judge your choice — we'll maximise whatever you select.
