Raja Ampat's Premier Pelagic Encounter
A submerged seamount where open-ocean currents deliver manta rays, reef sharks, massive fish schools, and occasional visits from the ocean's largest creatures. Among the world's finest underwater encounters.
Seamount Science
Unlike wall dives or coral garden sites, Blue Magic is a seamount — an underwater mountain rising from 30+ meters to within 7 meters of the surface. This topography accelerates currents through Dampier Strait, concentrating plankton and small fish that attract larger predators.
The result is a dive site where you hover in blue water watching marine theater unfold. Reef manta rays glide past within arm's reach, their 4-5 meter wingspans casting shadows across the reef below.
The Seamount Effect
Currents accelerate around the pinnacle, concentrating plankton → small fish swarm → predators arrive → a complete food chain pyramid visible in real-time during every dive. The seamount's coral coverage and reef fish would be the highlight anywhere else, but here they serve as supporting cast to the pelagic spectacle above.
The Cast
Signature Encounter
Nov-AprReef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) visit cleaning stations regularly during season. Mantas circle at 12-18m depth for extended close encounters. Up to 8 mantas documented on exceptional dives, with multiple individuals often present simultaneously.
Predator Zone
Grey reef sharks, whitetip, and blacktip sharks patrol consistently. Schooling grey reef sharks often number 10-20+ cruising the current line. Occasional hammerhead sightings during early morning dives in peak season.
Living Walls
Chevron barracuda in schools of 100-500+ create mesmerizing silver spirals. Big-eye trevally form dense baitballs. Surgeonfish, fusiliers, and rainbow runners blanket the seamount in living carpets. Biomass concentration rivals the world's most productive sites.
Supporting Cast
Spotted eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse, giant groupers, bumphead parrotfish, hawksbill turtles, and thousands of reef species. Rare sightings: whale sharks, mobula rays, oceanic mantas. Macro: pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, ghost pipefish.

Best Timing
Morning dives typically offer best visibility and fish aggregation. Tidal current determines optimal timing — your dive guide coordinates with current predictions. Reef hooks recommended for extended observation at the peak when current is running.
Complete Dampier Experience
Blue Magic lies 15 minutes by speedboat from Kri Island. Most itineraries visit at least twice, timing dives for optimal current. Pair with nearby world-class sites for a complete Dampier Strait experience.

Blue Magic Questions
Advanced Open Water certification is recommended. Blue Magic involves moderate to strong currents requiring comfort with drift diving and negative entries. Experienced Open Water divers with current experience can dive the site with skilled guides who manage positioning and depth.
Manta season runs November through April, with peak encounters December through March. Mantas visit the cleaning stations on the seamount during incoming tides. Morning dives typically offer the best combination of visibility and manta activity. Your dive master times the dive based on tidal predictions.
Reef hooks are strongly recommended when current is running. They allow you to anchor yourself at the seamount peak and observe manta rays, sharks, and schooling fish without fighting the current. Most luxury vessels provide reef hooks, but bringing your own ensures availability.
Blue Magic is best suited for divers comfortable with currents. However, on calm days with minimal current, experienced guides can safely bring competent Open Water divers to the site. Your dive master assesses conditions each morning and recommends appropriate sites for all skill levels in the group.
They complement each other perfectly. Blue Magic delivers big pelagic spectacle — mantas, sharks, and massive schooling fish in blue water. Cape Kri offers the world's highest reef biodiversity with 374+ species. Most itineraries pair both sites across different tidal conditions. Together they represent the pinnacle of Dampier Strait diving.
