20 Things You Need to Know
The guide we wish existed when our founders first sailed these waters. No fluff — practical intelligence from people who live and work in Raja Ampat year-round.
Decade of Experience
Fly international to Jakarta or Bali → connect to Sorong (Garuda, Lion Air, Batik Air). Asia: 8-14 hours. Australia: 6-8 hours. Europe: 18-24 hours. Arrive Sorong early afternoon to board same day.
Peak: October-April. Calmest seas, 25-30m visibility, 28-30°C water. Dec-Jan busiest (book 4-6 months ahead). Mar-Apr: excellent with fewer boats. Off-season May-Sep: rougher but unique encounters.
Every visitor needs one. ~IDR 1,000,000 (~$65 USD), valid one year. On our charters, we process before your arrival — no queuing at Sorong permit office.
Most nationalities: visa-free or VOA for 30 days. Some require advance application. Check your passport requirements. We provide visa guidance as part of pre-trip concierge.
No mandatory vaccinations. Recommended: Hep A/B, typhoid, tetanus. Malaria risk in Papua — consult travel doctor. Vessels carry first aid, O2, satellite comms. Nearest hospital: Sorong.
Telkomsel coverage at Sorong and some villages. At sea: no signal at most anchorages. Luxury vessels have satellite for emergencies. Treat it as a digital detox — it's part of the magic.
Reef-safe sunscreen, lightweight clothing, dive cert, medications, passport. Underwater camera, dry bag, seasickness meds. DO NOT bring: chemical sunscreen, single-use plastic, heavy luggage.
Minimum: PADI Open Water. Advanced recommended for deep sites and currents. We provide all dive equipment on luxury charters. 3mm wetsuit sufficient for 27-30°C water.
Non-divers miss nothing above 5 metres. 75% of coral species visible from the surface. Manta rays, turtles, reef sharks — all accessible without certification.
27-30°C year-round. Thermoclines can drop to 24-26°C at depth. 3mm wetsuit standard; rashguard sufficient for snorkeling. No drysuits needed — ever.
Manta rays (Oct-Apr), whale sharks (seasonal), walking sharks (night dives), pygmy seahorses, 1,700+ fish species. World record: 374 species counted in a single dive at Cape Kri.
50+ world-class sites. Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Manta Sandy, The Passage, Boo Windows. Each region offers distinct ecosystems. 7 days covers the highlights; 10+ for comprehensive coverage.
Papuan territory with strong adat traditions. Dress modestly in villages. Ask permission for photos. Bring small gifts (school supplies, not candy). Our guides are from these communities.
Arborek and Sawinggrai are the most accessible. Traditional dances, handcraft markets, homestay culture. Our guides ensure visits create positive, respectful connections.
Raja Ampat is a conservation success — fish biomass increased 250% since MPA establishment. Your permit fee funds patrols, monitoring, and community development. Respect no-take zones.
Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). ATMs in Sorong only — withdraw before boarding. Credit cards rarely accepted outside Sorong. Carry IDR 2-3M for village purchases and tips. Small USD as backup.
The single most important decision. Private charter = maximum flexibility, comfort, access. Open trip = budget-friendly but shared. Resort-based = limited coverage. First-timers: private charter delivers the most.
#1 regret from first-timers: not enough nights. 5 nights feels rushed. 7 nights is the sweet spot. 10 nights covers north + south. 14 nights is the complete experience. Book the maximum your schedule allows.
Non-negotiable. Must cover medical evacuation — helicopter airlift costs $50,000+. DAN (Divers Alert Network) recommended for dive-specific coverage. Budget $200-400 for comprehensive 2-week policy.
Aggregators add 18-25% markup. We own and operate the vessels. Book direct for best pricing, real-time weather adaptation, and relationship with the crew who know these waters intimately.

Minimum: 5 nights. Recommended for first-timers: 7 nights. Ideal for comprehensive coverage: 10 nights. Complete experience including Misool: 14 nights. The #1 regret: not booking enough time.
