Raja Ampat Manta Ray Guide – Encounters with Ocean Giants
Raja Ampat is one of the world’s premier destinations for manta ray encounters. Both oceanic and reef manta rays frequent the archipelago’s cleaning stations, feeding areas, and current-swept channels. This guide helps you maximize your chances of unforgettable manta interactions.
Where to See Mantas
Manta Sandy – The most reliable site. Reef mantas visit cleaning stations on the sandy bottom daily. Shallow depth (12-17m) makes encounters accessible to all certified divers and even snorkelers when mantas rise near the surface.
Blue Magic – Oceanic mantas with larger wingspans (up to 5m) cruise the seamount. More dramatic encounters but less predictable. Dawn dives offer best chances.
Fam Islands Channel – A channel where mantas cruise between islands. Good for both diving and snorkeling encounters.
Best Season
November to April is peak manta season in northern Raja Ampat. Mantas are present year-round but in lower numbers during June-August. The seasonal cruise guide provides month-by-month detail.
Manta Etiquette
Maintain 3-meter distance, never chase or touch, stay low on the reef and let mantas approach, avoid flash photography, don’t position above mantas (blocking their exit), and limit groups to 4-6 divers per guide at cleaning stations.
