Raja Ampat: #1 of 7 Wonders of Southeast Asia 2026 — Condé Nast Traveler
#1

Condé Nast Traveler · March 2026

Of the 7 Wonders of
Southeast Asia

We were anchored at Piaynemo when the news landed. For those of us who have spent a decade operating charters through these waters, the recognition was overdue. For the rest of the world, it was a revelation.

The Record

Recognition #1 of 7 Wonders of Southeast Asia — Condé Nast Traveler, March 2026
Additional status UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (Sep 2025) · NatGeo Best of the World 2025
Marine biodiversity 75% of the world’s coral species · 1,700+ fish species · 1,500+ islands
Best season October – April, peaking January and February
Charter price From $1,900/night classic phinisi to $18,000+/night superyacht

Past Angkor Wat, Ha Long Bay and Borobudur

Five Reasons It Took the Top Place

01

Unmatched marine biodiversity

More than 600 hard coral species and 1,700 fish species across 40,000 square kilometres of West Papua.

02

Conservation that worked

The marine protected area, managed jointly with local communities, has turned poaching hotspots into thriving reefs over the past decade.

03

Double UNESCO recognition

Global Geopark in 2024 and Biosphere Reserve in September 2025. No other Southeast Asian destination carries both.

04

Improved access

Direct flights from Bali and Jakarta to Sorong have cut travel time dramatically, putting the archipelago within reach of a normal holiday window.

05

The quality of the fleet

The vessels operating here represent some of the finest floating accommodation in Asia — which is what makes the wilderness accessible without compromise.

“Raja Ampat combines raw wilderness and refined luxury in a way that no other destination in the region approaches.”

The Triple Crown

2026

Condé Nast Traveler

Number one of the Seven Wonders of Southeast Asia — the crown that means people now know why it matters when you say you have been.

2025

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Strengthened conservation protection across the archipelago, following Global Geopark designation in 2024.

2025

National Geographic

Best of the World listing, which drove the step change in international awareness that preceded the Condé Nast decision.

What It Means For Your Trip

Book Earlier Than
You Planned To

Inquiries rose 40% within two weeks of the announcement, and peak season vessels from December through February are booking faster than in any year we have operated. The fleet is finite — roughly fifteen true luxury vessels and fewer than five superyachts — and the world has just found out about them.

The reassurance is scale. With 1,500 islands spread across an area the size of Switzerland, even a doubling of visitor numbers would leave the majority of anchorages empty. Our captains know hundreds of them, and on any given day can position you where you will not see another vessel from sunrise to sunset. That is the advantage of a private charter over a fixed liveaboard route.

The Twelve Minutes at Wayag

Our captains told the visiting editors about the dawn light at Wayag that turns the lagoons from dark green to liquid gold in roughly twelve minutes, between 05:50 and 06:02. Time your visit for October or November and you get the same light with far fewer boats than the December to February peak.

How to Experience It

Luxury Yacht vs Land-Based Resort

Factor Luxury Yacht Charter Land-Based Resort
Access to sites Unlimited — anchor anywhere, change plans daily Fixed location, day trips only
Privacy Complete — the entire vessel is yours Shared facilities with other guests
Marine life 15–25 sites per week across the region Limited to reefs within boat distance
Flexibility Itinerary shifts with weather, wildlife and mood Fixed schedule, shared departures
Price — 7 nights $13,300–$126,000 whole vessel $5,000–$15,000 per person at a premium resort
Crew service Dedicated chef, crew of 6–15, near 1:1 ratio Shared staff, rotating attention

After the announcement, land-based resorts will fill faster than yachts — the largest premium resort here has twelve rooms, and the comfortable homestays take four to eight guests. A private vessel is the only way to guarantee flexibility, privacy and access to the full breadth of what earned the ranking.
