Explore Raja Ampat’s Island Groups

Raja Ampat — literally “Four Kings” — encompasses four major islands and over 1,500 smaller islands, cays, and shoals scattered across 40,000 square kilometers of the world’s most biodiverse ocean. Each island group offers distinct landscapes, marine ecosystems, cultural experiences, and expedition character. Understanding these regions is essential for designing your ideal luxury Raja Ampat experience.

The Four Kings & Beyond

Waigeo

The largest of the Four Kings. Home to Waisai (the regency capital), the iconic Wayag karst formations, Kabui Bay passages, and northern frontier dive sites. Waigeo’s eastern coast borders Dampier Strait — the marine epicenter. Cultural encounters with Papuan communities and bird of paradise trekking complement marine adventures.

Mansuar (Batanta)

Directly across Dampier Strait from Waigeo, Mansuar Island sits within the strait’s richest waters. Cape Kri, Sardine Reef, and Arborek village lie within its sphere. Most resort-based operations position here for direct access to world-class sites.

Misool

Southern Raja Ampat’s crown jewel. Misool marine reserve protects extraordinary soft coral gardens, Magic Mountain manta encounters, Boo Windows dramatic archways, and some of the least-visited premium dive sites in the archipelago. Requires 8+ day expeditions from northern bases.

Salawati

The least-explored of the Four Kings. Salawati’s western coast faces the open Ceram Sea, creating frontier diving conditions with large pelagic encounters. Limited infrastructure means Salawati destinations appear primarily on extended expedition itineraries. For adventurers seeking truly untouched territory.
