Waigeo
Home to Waisai, the regency capital, the iconic Wayag karst formations, the Kabui Bay passages and the northern frontier dive sites. Waigeo’s eastern coast borders Dampier Strait — the marine epicentre of the whole archipelago. Cultural encounters with Papuan communities and bird-of-paradise trekking sit alongside the diving here.

Across Dampier Strait
Mansuar & Batanta
Directly across the strait from Waigeo, sitting inside its richest waters. Cape Kri, Sardine Reef and Arborek village all lie within its sphere. Most resort-based operations position here for direct access to world-class sites — which is exactly why a vessel that keeps moving has the advantage.

Southern Raja Ampat’s crown jewel
Misool
The Misool marine reserve protects extraordinary soft coral gardens, the Magic Mountain manta cleaning station, the dramatic archways of Boo Windows, and some of the least-visited premium dive sites in the archipelago. It needs an 8-night expedition or longer from a northern base — the distance is the reason it stays pristine.

Salawati
Salawati’s western coast faces the open Ceram Sea, which creates genuine frontier conditions and large pelagic encounters. Limited infrastructure means it appears mostly on extended expedition itineraries — the choice for travellers who want territory that has not been photographed to death.

Before You Choose
Frequently Asked Questions
If it is your first visit, base the trip on Dampier Strait. It holds the highest concentration of premium sites, it is sheltered enough to be reliable, and it leaves room to add Piaynemo or Wayag without a long repositioning sail.
No — the length of your charter decides how many you reach. Four to six days realistically covers the north. Eight days adds the frontier sites. Twelve days is what it takes to include Misool properly rather than as a rushed detour.
For divers and photographers, yes. Misool’s soft coral density and its far lower diver traffic are genuinely different from the north, not just more of the same. For a first-time non-diving traveller, the extra sailing time is usually better spent on northern viewpoints and villages.
Rarely. Wayag sits four to six hours north of Dampier Strait, so it needs a six-day itinerary at minimum. Access is also subject to periodic closures, so it should never be the single reason you book a trip. Piaynemo delivers a similar panorama much closer in.
Arborek is the most rewarding and the easiest to include — a working Papuan village with handicraft markets and excellent house-reef snorkelling. Waigeo also offers bird-of-paradise trekking at dawn, which needs an overnight position nearby.
