Whale shark tourism in Cenderawasih, Raja Ampat and Triton Bay exists independently. Operators run Cenderawasih tours of four or five days. Operators run Raja Ampat tours of seven to ten. Operators run Triton Bay expeditions of six to eight. Nobody combines all three.
We built this route over three years. In 2024 we tested it with a single client willing to absorb the risk. In 2025 we ran it four times and every departure sold out. For 2026 we are opening it more broadly, though capacity stays deliberately limited.
Community relationships
Cenderawasih’s bagan fishing community requires goodwill and benefit-sharing negotiated over years, not a booking form.
Permit track record
Raja Ampat’s marine reserve permits require certified operators with a multi-year operating history in the region.
Remote supply chain
Triton Bay’s isolation demands a bespoke provisioning and fuel chain that has to be built before the first guest boards.

Surface snorkelling
These whale sharks are practically habituated — they have lived around the bagan fishing platforms for generations. The encounter is repeatable, shallow and effectively guaranteed. You snorkel at the surface while the shark feeds below you.

Diving and snorkelling
More elusive here — usually met during manta dives in open channels. You might see a whale shark across five dives, or none at all. The draw is the mantas, reliable from October to April, and the reef complexity. Whale sharks are the bonus, not the plan.

Triton Bay
Dive-only encounters
Wild animals, chasing plankton blooms, travelling fast and diving deep. You follow by boat and descend to 15 or 25 metres to interact. Brief, thrilling and unpredictable — the exact antithesis of the Cenderawasih bagan experience.

The Trilogy Routing
Cenderawasih Bay — Kwatisore
Embark in Manokwari. Three whale shark snorkel sessions, reef exploration and a community village visit.
Repositioning south
One full sea day with lectures, rest and wildlife watching as the vessel moves toward Raja Ampat.
Raja Ampat
Seven days and ten to twelve dive or snorkel sessions across the Dampier Strait, Arborek and the Waigeo reefs. Manta encounters, macro diving and the highest coral biodiversity on Earth.
Major passage
A full day at sea crossing from the Dampier Strait toward Triton Bay. Overnight underway.
Triton Bay
Six days of drift diving, deep dives and macro photography — mandarin fish, seahorses, nudibranchs — alongside whale shark searches that depend on weather and season.
Final passage
Return transit toward Sorong, with an optional final dive site or a leisure day.

Choosing Your Window
Raja Ampat’s mantas follow seasonal currents; Triton Bay’s whale sharks follow plankton blooms tied to upwelling. Those two windows do not fully overlap, so the honest answer is that you choose which one you weight.

Booked separately, Raja Ampat alone runs $9,800–$15,000 per person for seven days, before you add a Cenderawasih tour, a Triton Bay expedition, and the international and domestic flights that stitch them together. The trilogy removes three sets of transfers and roughly a week of travel days.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is the most common concern and the least common regret. The voyage is broken by two genuine landscape changes and a sea day between each, and the pacing is deliberately unhurried. That said, if three weeks is not realistic, the twelve-night Raja Ampat and Cenderawasih combination covers two of the three zones.
In Cenderawasih Bay, effectively yes — the residents feed at the bagan platforms year-round. In Raja Ampat they are a bonus rather than a plan. In Triton Bay probability swings between roughly 40% and 70% depending on your month. We will not tell you otherwise to close a booking.
The Cenderawasih encounters are surface snorkelling and need none. Triton Bay is dive-only and the profiles run to 25 metres, so Advanced Open Water and comfort in current are the practical minimum for that leg.
Capacity is deliberately limited and departures have historically sold out well in advance. For an October to February window, twelve months ahead is realistic rather than cautious.
Yes — the routing can start in Sorong and run in reverse, and individual legs can be dropped for a private charter. Dropping the Triton Bay leg is the most common adjustment when a group cannot commit to three weeks.
