Best Time to Visit Raja Ampat — Month-by-Month Guide
Season Overview
Peak Season: November-February
Optimal conditions: calmest seas, best visibility (25-40m), manta ray aggregations peak, comfortable air temperatures (28-32°C), water at 28-30°C. Highest demand — premium vessels book 12+ months ahead. Highest pricing with 15-25% seasonal premiums.
Shoulder Season: March-April, October
Excellent diving with fewer boats. Visibility 20-35m, mostly calm seas with occasional rain. Manta encounters still good March-April. Best value: lower pricing, better availability, fewer crowds. Recommended for experienced travelers seeking quality without peak-season premiums.
Wet/Monsoon: May-September
South-east monsoon brings rougher seas, reduced visibility (10-20m), more rain. However: unique encounters including whale sharks in some areas, spectacular jellyfish blooms, fewer tourists, significantly lower prices. Suitable for adventurous divers comfortable with variable conditions.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
October: Season transition — conditions improving, seas calming, visibility increasing. Excellent value with emerging peak-season quality. Early manta arrivals at cleaning stations.
November: Peak season begins. Calm seas, 25-35m visibility, manta ray activity increasing. Liveaboards and charters filling rapidly. Book early for premium vessels.
December-January: Peak conditions. Glassy seas, maximum visibility, reliable manta encounters, best photography conditions. Holiday period demands premium pricing and 12+ month advance booking.
February: Late peak — still excellent with slightly fewer crowds than December-January. Strong manta activity continues. Some late-booking availability appears.
March-April: Excellent transition period. Diving quality remains high, seas generally calm, fewer boats at popular sites. Best value in the high-quality season window. Our personal recommendation for first-time visitors seeking quality without crowds.
May-June: Monsoon building. Rougher seas begin, visibility decreasing. Some operators shift to sheltered itineraries. Significant price reductions.
July-September: Full monsoon. Variable conditions — some days excellent, others impossible. Only for adventurous travelers with flexible schedules. Lowest prices, unique encounters.
