Raja Ampat Diving Guide — Everything Divers Need to Know

Raja Ampat offers what many experienced divers describe as the finest underwater experiences available on Earth today. With 600+ coral species, 1,700+ fish species, reliable manta ray encounters, reef shark patrols at most sites, and marine biodiversity densities unmatched anywhere, the archipelago rewards divers of all levels with encounters that redefine expectations of what tropical reefs can deliver.

Diving Conditions

Water Temperature: 28-30°C year-round. 3mm wetsuit sufficient, some prefer 5mm

Visibility: 15-40m depending on site, tide, and season. Peak November-February

Currents: Mild to strong depending on site. Some sites (Cape Kri, Blue Magic) require current management skills. Others (Manta Sandy, Arborek) are suitable for all levels

Depth: Most sites 5-30m. Many outstanding experiences at 10-18m

Certification: Open Water accesses 60% of popular sites. Advanced Open Water recommended for current dives. Nitrox valuable for extended bottom times

Liveaboard (Recommended for Divers): 3-4 dives/day, 18-25+ dives per week. Access to all sites including remote locations. From $250/night. Maximum dive efficiency.

Private Charter: Flexible dive schedule, choose your sites, pace your group. Professional dive guides included on most vessels. From $3,500/day per vessel.

Resort: 2-3 dives/day, access Dampier Strait sites by speedboat. Unlimited house reef diving. From $200/night plus diving.

Equipment & Preparation

Essential: Certification card, dive logbook, dive insurance (DAN), reef-safe sunscreen, underwater camera

Recommended: Personal mask, dive computer, reef hook (for current sites), surface marker buoy, dive light

Certification: Consider completing Advanced Open Water and Nitrox before arrival to maximize site access and bottom times. Many operators offer onboard courses if time allows.

Insurance: Dive insurance (DAN or equivalent) required by most operators. Comprehensive travel insurance with medical evacuation strongly recommended given Raja Ampat’s remote location.
