Boo Windows — Dramatic Underwater Archways in Misool

Boo Windows ranks among the most visually dramatic dive sites in Raja Ampat’s southern reaches. Massive limestone archways piercing through island rock create natural underwater windows where tropical sunlight streams through openings framed by sea fans, soft corals, and sponges in colors so vivid they seem artificial. This is Raja Ampat’s most theatrical dive site — where geology and marine biology collaborate to create underwater compositions that leave even experienced divers speechless.

The Windows

Carved over millennia by ocean currents through Misool’s ancient limestone, Boo’s archways create swim-through passages connecting different sections of reef. The main windows sit at 10-18 meters depth — perfect for extended exploration. As you approach each opening, sunlight penetrating from the opposite side creates silhouette effects, illuminating the dense soft coral growth that encrusts every surface of the limestone frames.

Multiple windows and passages offer different perspectives. Some are narrow enough that a diver passes through individually, framed by gorgonian sea fans stretching 2+ meters across. Others open wide enough for pairs, with barrel sponges and whip corals decorating the edges. The interplay of light, geology, and marine life creates compositions that rank among the most photographed underwater scenes in Indonesia.

Marine Life at Boo Windows

Soft Coral Gardens

The walls surrounding and within the windows support extraordinary soft coral density in vivid reds, oranges, purples, and yellows. Dendronephthya and Scleronephthya colonies create living curtains across the rock surfaces. This density results from consistent current flow through the passages delivering nutrients.

Macro Treasures

Pygmy seahorses on gorgonian fans, ornate ghost pipefish hovering near crinoids, nudibranchs in exceptional variety, blue-ringed octopus under rubble, and frogfish camouflaged on sponges. Boo Windows is a macro photographer’s paradise with subjects at every focal length.

Sharks & Residents

Wobbegong sharks — the carpet sharks endemic to this region — rest under table corals and overhangs throughout the site. Their camouflage is so effective that guides often point them out before divers notice. Resident groupers, sweetlips, and batfish schools add movement to the static beauty of the reef.

Photography

Wide-angle photography with natural light penetrating the windows creates dramatic silhouette and backlight compositions. Macro photographers find endless subjects on the surrounding walls. The combination of topography, marine life, and light makes Boo Windows one of Raja Ampat’s most rewarding photography dive sites.
