Blue Magic — Raja Ampat’s Premier Pelagic Encounter

Blue Magic stands as Raja Ampat’s most electrifying dive site for pelagic marine encounters. This submerged seamount in the heart of Dampier Strait creates a natural aggregation point where open-ocean currents deliver nutrient-rich water, attracting manta rays, reef sharks, massive fish schools, and occasional visits from the ocean’s largest creatures. For divers seeking the adrenaline of big-animal encounters combined with Raja Ampat’s legendary biodiversity, Blue Magic delivers experiences that rank among the world’s finest underwater encounters.

What Makes Blue Magic Extraordinary

Unlike wall dives or coral garden sites, Blue Magic is a seamount — an underwater mountain rising from 30+ meters to within 7 meters of the surface. This topography accelerates currents passing through Dampier Strait, concentrating plankton and small fish that attract larger predators in a natural food chain pyramid visible in real-time during every dive.

The result is a dive site where you hover in blue water watching marine theater unfold. Reef manta rays glide past within arm’s reach, their 4-5 meter wingspans casting shadows across the reef below. Grey reef sharks patrol the seamount’s perimeter. Schools of barracuda numbering in the hundreds spiral in silver columns. Giant trevally hunt the reef’s edges with explosive speed. Below, the seamount itself supports healthy coral coverage and reef fish populations that would be the highlight anywhere else but here serve as supporting cast to the pelagic spectacle above.

Marine Life Encounters

Manta Rays

Reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) visit Blue Magic’s cleaning stations regularly during season (November-April). Mantas circle at 12-18 meters depth, allowing extended close encounters. Multiple individuals often present simultaneously — up to 8 mantas documented on exceptional dives.

Sharks

Grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and blacktip reef sharks patrol the seamount consistently. Schooling grey reef sharks often number 10-20+ individuals cruising the current line at the seamount’s edge. Occasional hammerhead sightings during early morning dives in peak season.

Schooling Fish

Chevron barracuda in schools of 100-500+ create mesmerizing silver spirals. Big-eye trevally form dense baitballs. Surgeonfish, fusiliers, and rainbow runners blanket the seamount in living carpets of movement. The biomass concentration at Blue Magic rivals the world’s most productive marine sites.

Other Encounters

Spotted eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse, giant groupers, bumphead parrotfish, hawksbill turtles, and thousands of reef fish species populate the seamount ecosystem. Rare sightings include whale sharks, mobula rays, and oceanic manta rays. Macro life on the reef includes pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and ornate ghost pipefish.

How to Dive Blue Magic

Blue Magic is included on virtually all liveaboard itineraries and private charter routes operating in Dampier Strait. The site lies approximately 15 minutes by speedboat from Kri Island, making it accessible from both vessel-based and resort-based operations. Most itineraries visit Blue Magic at least twice, timing dives for optimal current conditions.

We recommend pairing Blue Magic dives with nearby Cape Kri (10 minutes transit) and Sardine Reef for a complete Dampier Strait experience showcasing the full range of Raja Ampat underwater environments — pelagic encounters, world-record reef diversity, and coral wall diving.
