Common Questions
Most liveaboards require a minimum of Open Water certification, though Advanced Open Water is recommended for Raja Ampat's current-rich sites. Some vessels offer refresher courses and advanced certification during the trip. If you have fewer than 50 logged dives, we recommend vessels with experienced guides who can provide additional support at challenging sites like Blue Magic and Cape Kri.
A liveaboard sells individual berths on scheduled departures with fixed itineraries — you share the vessel with other guests (typically 10-24 divers). A private charter provides exclusive use of the entire vessel with a fully customizable itinerary. Liveaboards are more affordable per person; charters offer complete privacy and flexibility. Both access the same dive sites.
Yes, most liveaboards welcome snorkelers and non-diving companions. Raja Ampat's shallow reefs offer extraordinary snorkeling directly from the vessel or tender boats. Non-divers can also enjoy island hiking, kayaking, village visits, and wildlife watching while divers are underwater. Some boutique vessels are better suited for mixed groups — ask us for recommendations.
Essential items: dive certification card and logbook, personal dive computer, reef-safe sunscreen, lightweight clothing, underwater camera, and any personal medications. Most mid-range and all premium/ultra-luxury liveaboards offer nitrox (EANx32 or EANx36). Some include it in the trip price; others charge $100-$200 for the week. Nitrox certification is required — if you don't have it, several vessels offer onboard certification courses.
