Raja Ampat Luxury Underwater Photography Package 2026 — Guided Workshop Yacht

We run the only private-charter underwater photography workshop in Raja Ampat. Max capacity: 8 photographers per yacht. Every other major operator books 40-60 divers per liveaboard—chaos for anyone trying to compose a shot. We cap it at 8 so you get 60+ minutes at each site, underwater time to experiment with strobes, compose tighter framing, and actually finish your creative vision before the anchor winch brings you up.

Alex Mustard (Seawater Photographer, National Geographic contributor) sold out his 2026 March series within 11 hours of announcement. That’s the demand level for genuine photography-first experiences. If you missed those dates, this package delivers the equivalent—a dedicated photo yacht, early morning access before commercial boats arrive, and instructors who speak camera settings as fluently as they speak dive tables.

Why This Isn’t an Ordinary Diving Trip

Standard liveaboards move groups of 30+ divers through shallow reefs in 30-minute intervals. Divemaster glances at your rig, gives a thumbs up, escorts you down. You’re one of many faces on the boat. Here, our dive guide (a former wedding photographer turned underwater specialist) does a 15-minute pre-dive briefing on composition: where the light will hit at 11:45am, which rocks frame the coral bommie, why the macro subjects are more abundant on the western slope at this time of year.

The camera room—an actual cabin dedicated to equipment—has backup batteries, memory cards, lens cleaning supplies, and two Pelican cases for overnight storage. We carry redundant underwater housing seals, strobe bulbs, and a UV filter library. If your strobes fail, you have backups.

Available Dates 2026-2027

Because Alex Mustard’s March sessions evaporated, we’ve scheduled four dedicated photography liveaboards for 2026: May 3-10 (monsoon light, moody skies), September 14-21 (clearest water, strong current excitement), October 5-12 (warm water, calmest seas), and November 2-9 (golden-hour light, nutrient-rich reefs). December and January 2027 also open for bookings.

Compare: Alex Mustard Sold Out vs. Our Offering

Mustard’s workshop premium justifies itself—he’s National Geographic. But the mechanics of what we deliver are equivalent: small group, early access, dedicated guidance. The difference is psychology. Mustard attendees spend 40% of the trip starstruck. Our attendees spend 100% of the trip focused on their craft, getting real feedback from an instructor who studied under Mustard’s techniques.

Camera Equipment Requirements

Mirrorless camera (Canon, Sony, Nikon) or DSLR, UW housing rated to 60+ meters (Nauticam, Ikelite, or equivalent), single or dual strobes (Retra, Sea & Sea), macro lens (60mm or wider), zoom lens (8-15mm or 16-35mm). We can loan a backup housing if yours fails, and we stock extra strobe bulbs and sync cables. No film cameras or bridge cameras, please—rapid autofocus and manual control are essential.

Daily Schedule

Wake at 5:30am to coffee and fruit. 6:30am first dive (you’re underwater before other boats launch). Back aboard 8:15am, breakfast, equipment rinse and dry. 10am photo briefing (composition, current predictions, subject behavior). 11am-3pm free time (rest, charge batteries, image review). 3:45pm second dive. 5:15pm back aboard. 6pm evening classroom (post-processing, shot critique, strobe theory). 7pm dinner. 8:30pm sleep. Four dives daily is standard; we can do three if you need longer battery-change windows.

Our photo guide, Sita, spent 8 years as wedding photographer in Jakarta before transitioning to underwater work. She doesn’t just show you angles—she tells you *why* a shot works emotionally. Book early 2027 dates if you want her specifically.

Raja Ampat Photography: Sites & Seasons

Dampier Strait (Cape Kri, Blue Magic, Sardine Reef) delivers the most varied subjects: large pelagics, schooling fish, small critters. But light conditions shift monthly. May-June see monsoon cloud cover—dramatic, moody, perfect for contrast-heavy editing. September offers crystalline 35+ meter visibility. October is warmest (29°C, less thermal fatigue, less camera condensation). November brings golden hour light and nutrient-rich plankton, attracting manta rays.

Macro subjects are year-round: nudibranchs (variety peaks in Sept-Oct), seahorses, ghost pipefish, juvenile reef fish. Wide-angle pelagic work peaks May-October. If you’re chasing manta ray photographs specifically, we recommend Oct-Nov bookings when manta activity concentrates around cleaning stations.

Post-Trip Deliverables

During your workshop, you’ll receive daily image critiques: what worked, why, and specific suggestions for next dive. Our guide will review your shot composition against light angles, strobe placement, depth-of-field trade-offs. You’ll leave with actionable feedback and 200+ of your own images. We can arrange Lightroom presets tailored to underwater color correction if you request before arrival.

FAQ: Underwater Photography Luxury Workshop

Q: What if I’m a beginner photographer? Our Foundation packages suit beginners who own a camera but haven’t shot UW yet. We cover housing basics, exposure compensation, autofocus modes, and composition rules tailored to underwater space.
Q: Can I bring two camera bodies? Strongly recommended. You’ll shoot so much that one body’s memory fills quickly. Backup body protects against housing failure mid-dive.
Q: How is post-processing taught? Our 10-night Advanced package includes a 90-minute Lightroom session showing color correction (blue/magenta/green cast removal), contrast curves, and saturation-per-channel edits. We don’t turn you into Mustard, but you’ll understand the technical fundamentals.
Q: Are these dives suitable if I’m PADI Open Water? Yes, if you have 50+ logged dives. We cap descent to 30m on photo dives, which is within Open Water limits. Most photographers have AOW or higher anyway.
Q: What’s the camera room setup exactly? A dedicated cabin with waterproof cases, battery chargers (110-240v), memory card readers, lens cleaning stations, and housing maintenance supplies. Temperature controlled, salt-spray sealed, 24/7 access.
The majority of our photo workshop attendees sell or license their images afterward. We’ve seen Instagram growth from 2k to 50k followers in six months post-workshop. That’s not our goal, but it’s a nice side effect of finally having time to compose.
