Should I Do Komodo First or Raja Ampat First?

Answer: Komodo first, then Raja Ampat.

Here’s why: Komodo’s currents, depth challenges, and shark-focused diving prepare your body and mind for varied diving. Raja Ampat’s pristine reefs then feel even more magical because you’ve already been immersed in the adrenaline. Psychologically, the sequence works — intense, then transcendent.

Also logistically: Bali → Labuan Bajo (Komodo) is easier and cheaper than Bali → Sorong (Raja Ampat). So the natural flow is Bali hub in/out, Komodo as the first adventure, Raja Ampat as the culmination.

Plus, if you reverse it (Raja Ampat first), coming down from 1,500 fish species and pristine coral gardens to 300 fish species and dramatic sharks feels anticlimactic. The progression Komodo → Raja Ampat builds momentum.

What’s the Best Season for Combined Komodo + Raja Ampat?

April–November for Komodo (dry season, calmest seas). October–April for Raja Ampat (peak season, best visibility). The overlap: October–November and April are the sweet spots where both regions are excellent.

How Does Your Dive Skill Level Affect This Journey?

Open Water Diver: You can do certain Komodo sites (Batu Bolong, Pink Beach — safer, shallower) and many Raja Ampat sites (Wayag, Pianemo). You’ll miss some current dives in both regions, but plenty remain accessible. Consider doing an Advanced Open Water course during one of the liveaboards (EUR 1,200–1,500).

Advanced Open Water / 3+ years experience: Unrestricted access to 95% of both regions’ best sites. Currents won’t intimidate you. Depth and navigation are comfortable. This is the ideal experience level for the full Komodo-Raja Ampat journey.

Rescue Diver or higher: All sites open. You become an asset to the group, and guides often invite experienced divers to help with team management, photography assistance, and safety support.

What About Travel Insurance for Both Regions?

Standard diver travel insurance covers both Komodo and Raja Ampat. DAN Insurance and Allianz (Europe) both recognize both regions as established dive destinations. Ensure your policy covers:
