Home / Halmahera + Raja Ampat Surf & Luxury Leisure Charter 2026 — Waves + Reefs
TL;DR: World-class untapped surf + world-class diving, one boat. 2-3 days Halmahera west coast (uncrowded breaks), 4-5 days Raja Ampat diving. 10 days, Ternate to Sorong. Niche luxury for surfer-divers. From $11,800 per night charter. Operated by Juara Holding Group’s 50+ vessel fleet.

Halmahera + Raja Ampat Surf & Luxury Leisure Charter 2026

A luxury diver once asked us, “What if I could also surf?” We said we’d have to build the boat.

This niche product emerged in 2024. A guest—professional surfer, PADI Divemaster, independently wealthy—wanted an expedition where she could free-dive one day and ride uncrowded waves the next. We found the Halmahera west coast. Untouched. Consistent swells. No competing surfers.

The product is small—we run it only 3-4 times annually, limiting to 4-6 guests per sailing to preserve break exclusivity. But demand from the intersection of “wealthy surfers who dive” is intense.

The Halmahera West Coast: Undiscovered Surf

Indonesia has Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Keramas, Mentawai—legendary breaks featured in every surf magazine. The Halmahera west coast has world-class waves and zero crowds.

The breaks are unnamed on most maps. Local fishermen know them, but tourism infrastructure is absent. Swell comes from the same Indian Ocean weather systems feeding Mentawai, but refraction, island protection, and seasonal timing create unique patterns.

Peak swell: June-September (southern hemisphere winter sending ground swell north). Secondary: December-March (summer storms). The charter is designed for September and July-August trips when consistent waist-to-head-high waves appear without the Mentawai crowds.

Break types vary: reef breaks (sharp, fast, technical), beach breaks (forgiving, powerful), point breaks (long peeling rides). One day you’re surfing rocky reefs; the next, sandy point breaks. No two days are identical.

Understanding the Routing: Surf Days + Dive Days

Days Location Primary Activity Secondary Activity
1-2 Ternate to Halmahera west Boat positioning, cultural orientation Snorkeling, rest
3-5 Halmahera west coast (three breaks) Surfing (2-4 sessions daily) Snorkeling, relaxation, boat movement between breaks
6-7 Transit Halmahera to Raja Ampat Boat journey (12 hours), rest days Fish spotting, relaxation, briefing
8-9 Raja Ampat (Sorong-area reefs) Diving (3-4 dives daily) Snorkeling, relaxation, macro exploration
10 Sorong Disembark, airport transfer

You’re not compromising either activity. Days 3-5 are dedicated to surfing—multiple sessions, boat movement to find optimal conditions, full attention to waves. Days 8-9 are full diving—reefs, mantas, whatever the ocean provides. You’re not surfing in the morning and diving in the afternoon; each segment gets complete focus.

The Halmahera West Surf Experience

Your alarm goes at 5:00 AM. The captain has been watching the swell forecast and dawn light. The break is four kilometers away. Breakfast is quick—fruit, bread, strong coffee. By 5:45 AM, you’re in the tender headed toward the lineup.

Paddle-out is easy—no rocks, no urchins, no crowd. Three other guests and your guide are your only lineup companions. The wave face is shoulder-high, glassy in the light wind. You catch your first wave at 6:20 AM.

The ride lasts eight seconds. Clean, barreling turn. Finish at the beach. Paddle back out. Five more waves before sunrise. By 7:30 AM, you’re heading back to the yacht.

Breakfast-proper is 8:00 AM. Mid-morning session is 10:30 AM—same break or a different break depending on tide and swell. Four waves per person, then back for lunch. Afternoon session at 14:00 at a third break. You’re surfing 12-15 waves daily—more than you’d get at a crowded resort.

By evening, you’re tired, salty, sun-soaked, happy. Dinner is grilled fish from the local market. You’re asleep by 20:00.

Insider Tip: Bring soft-top boards or rent locally if your board doesn’t travel well. Airplane travel damages hard boards. We have two soft-tops aboard for guest use. Your skill level should be intermediate minimum (can paddle out in 1-2 meter swell, comfortable with local breaks). Beginners should consider our Raja Ampat-only options or learn at a dedicated surf school first.

The Raja Ampat Segment: Diving After Surfing

After 3-4 intense days of surfing, Days 8-9 are restorative diving. You’re not pushing physically as hard. You’re moving slowly underwater, observing, photographing. The pace shift is psychological recovery.

Raja Ampat diving targets German Channel (manta probability), Sawandarek Strait (reef density), and macro sites. You’ll do 3-4 dives daily. Some divers take Day 7 as a complete rest day—no diving, no surfing, just sleeping, reading, eating, gazing at the ocean.

The blend works because surfing is explosive and aerobic; diving is meditative and technical. Your body uses different energy systems. The two feel complementary, not exhausting.

Seasonal Timing and Swell Consistency

June-August (Southern Hemisphere Winter): Consistent south-facing swell, waist-to-overhead waves, strongest season. High probability of multiple rideable days. Wind tends light (morning glassy sessions). This is peak-season booking.

July-August (Secondary Peak): Same as June-August. Often less crowded worldwide, so Halmahera sees fewer visiting surfers (not that there are many anyway).

September-October: Swell diminishes to waist-high, less frequent. Possible, but not guaranteed. Booking is cheaper; expectations should adjust.

December-March (Summer Storms): Swell is lighter but consistent. Wind is often stronger (afternoon chop). Morning sessions are better. Tropical weather can produce rain. Viable for intermediate surfers, not ideal for beginners or high-performance riders.

We recommend July-August for maximum swell + minimal crowds. Raja Ampat manta season (October-April) is secondary planning—the charter works October-April, but manta probability is lower in October than November-April.

Comparing Solo Surf vs. Solo Dive vs. The Combo

Dedicated surf trip, Mentawai-area: $4,200-$8,500 per person (5 days, crowded breaks, shared boat). Dedicated diving, Raja Ampat: $9,100-$14,500 per person (7 days, world-class reefs). Separately: $13,300-$23,000.

The Surf & Leisure charter: $11,800 per night (example: 4-person group = $11,800 per person). You’re getting both in one voyage—zero logistical complexity, no re-booking, no split between communities or operators. The combo is cheaper than doing both separately.

The trade-off? Less time in each zone than a dedicated trip. But for athletes with multiple interests, the variety is the feature, not the bug.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if there’s no swell during my dates?

Rare during June-August, but possible. Halmahera gets swell from the southern hemisphere; major swell events happen weekly during peak season. If swell is genuinely flat (happens 10-15% of the time even in peak season), we focus the charter on snorkeling, diving, and cultural activities around Ternate. You’re not wasting a charter—it’s just a different vacation.

Can non-surfers join the charter?

Yes. Partners or family members who don’t surf can snorkel during Halmahera days and dive during Raja Ampat days. The boat doesn’t leave non-surfers behind. They have equal access to activities; surfing is just optional for them.

Is the boat stable for surfers with their boards?

Our Surf & Leisure vessels have specialized board storage (racks in the hull, padded hold) and tender systems for safe paddle-out. Surfboards don’t fall off. We’ve never had a board lost to ocean or poor handling. If you bring personal boards, we secure them carefully. Soft-tops are safer than hardboards; rentals are available.

Do we need guides for surfing?

A local guide with surf knowledge accompanies the boat. They read swells, advise on break selection, know tides, and provide local context. They don’t necessarily surf with you—they’re water-safety personnel and local liaisons. Some guests ask them to paddle out; others prefer independence.

What’s the fitness level required?

Intermediate. Surfing 12-15 waves daily is more than casual resort time. Diving 3-4 dives daily is standard. Combined, you’re active and tired. Very fit guests love the intensity. Less athletic guests can dial it back (fewer surf sessions, rest days). Communicate your fitness comfort at booking.

Are the breaks reef or beach breaks?

Mixed. Two reef breaks (technical, fast), one beach break (forgiving, powerful), one point break (long peeling ride). All breaks are free of sea urchins and sharp rocks. Reef shoes are recommended. Reef damage is minimal because foot traffic is virtually zero—these are pristine breaks rarely paddled.

Can we stay longer in Halmahera and skip Raja Ampat?

Yes. Customization is standard. A 6-day Halmahera-only surf charter (Ternate to Sorong) runs $11,200 per night and focuses purely on waves. A 7-day Raja Ampat-only diving charter runs $9,100 per night. Discuss your preferences at booking; we’ll route accordingly.
