Raja Ampat & Sumba Luxury Crossing Expedition 2026
When you think of luxury Indonesia, you typically picture one thing: either the land or the sea. But what if you could have both in a single, unforgettable journey? That’s exactly what we deliver when you combine our Raja Ampat liveaboard operations with Sumba’s emerging luxury scene. This isn’t a compromise—it’s a deliberate strategy to show you Indonesia as few travelers ever see it.
Sumba is the rising star of Asian luxury. While Bali became oversaturated and overpriced, Sumba maintained its authenticity. Nihi Sumba sits in the top 10 luxury resorts in Asia. The island has the dramatic savanna landscapes of East Africa, the cultural depth of a pre-modern society still practicing Marapu traditions, and something most travelers miss: silence. Real silence. No scooters. No honking. Just the wind across grass and the sound of horses galloping toward Weekuri Lake, a freshwater lagoon surrounded by white cliffs that looks like a set piece from another world.
Then you trade that silence for the opposite: the sound of your own breathing underwater. Raja Ampat’s reefs are genuinely the most biodiverse on Earth. Scientists have counted 1,500+ fish species and 600+ coral species in these waters. When you dive here with our fleet, you’re not just seeing fish—you’re watching them fight for space on a coral wall so crowded with life it’s almost overwhelming.
The logistics sound complex but we’ve refined them. You fly Denpasar to Tambolaka via Bali Premium Trip’s partners. Five to six days in Sumba: two nights at Nihi or a comparable property, full days exploring Pasola festival grounds, Bajawa villages, and Weekuri Lake. Then you fly Tambolaka to Sorong—that’s the crossover point. From Sorong, you board one of our liveaboards for 7-10 days of Raja Ampat diving and island exploration.
What makes this different from booking separately? Juara Holding Group manages the entire flow. Your luggage, your guide, your preferences—it all moves with you. You don’t touch a booking confirmation after day one. That’s what 10+ years and 50+ vessels gets you: a machine that works.
Why Combine Sumba and Raja Ampat?
The answer is simple: variety at the highest level. Most luxury travelers stay in one place. You get excellent service, excellent food, and after four days you’ve seen everything. Our crossing approach is for people who want to check two major boxes without two separate trips. Sumba gives you land, culture, and exclusive resort luxury. Raja Ampat gives you water, diving, and raw natural systems. Together they form a complete picture of Indonesian luxury.
Sumba in 2026 is still underdeveloped compared to Bali. That means prices haven’t doubled every five years. It also means the people haven’t become cynical about tourists. The Marapu religious system is still practiced sincerely. The Pasola festival still happens in February-March as it has for centuries. You’re seeing continuity, not performance.
Raja Ampat, by contrast, is at peak experience. The reefs are still strong because the area was declared a marine national park in 1997. Our 50+ vessel fleet respects strict diving protocols. You get 4-5 dives per day on some itineraries, but we rotate sites and limit divers per site to maintain ecosystem health. This is the kind of detail that separates us from operators who just chase volume.
The Itinerary: Day-by-Day Overview
Days 1-2: Bali → Sumba Arrival Fly Denpasar to Tambolaka. Arrive Sumba, settle at your resort. Evening welcome dinner with Juara Holding Group local director. Briefing on Sumba’s geography, Marapu traditions, and weather patterns. First sunset over Sumba savanna.
Days 3-5: Sumba Exploration Full-day guided tour to Pasola festival grounds (even outside festival months, the landscape is magnificent—rolling plains, traditional villages, the ceremonial beach where horsemen traditionally compete). Visit Weekuri Lake. If timing aligns, you may see the freshwater lake at high tide with saltwater intrusion creating a visible color gradient. Two-hour village walk with stop at a Marapu temple. Evening cooking class using local ingredients: palm sugar, turmeric, coconut, and fresh fish.
Days 6-7: Sumba → Sorong Transfer Morning visit to a local weaving workshop—Sumba textiles are world-class, and seeing the process on traditional looms is humbling. Mid-day transfer to Tambolaka airport. Arrive Sorong evening, overnight hotel. Meet your liveaboard captain and dive team. Equipment briefing and cabin assignment.
Days 8-14: Raja Ampat Liveaboard Seven to ten days depending on itinerary choice. Standard routing: Sorong → Dampier Strait → Pef Island → Kri Island → Misool → Wayag Islands → Back to Sorong. Four to five dives daily. Snorkeling sessions. Island exploration. Night dives on select evenings. Zodiac expeditions to see dolphins, sea turtles, and reef sharks. One evening a naturalist from the dive team does a presentation on coral biology and the global reef crisis.
Day 15: Return Arrive Sorong morning. Flight back to Bali or onward to your next destination.
What’s Included vs. What’s Not
Here’s where most operators get vague. We don’t. Included: all internal transfers within Sumba and between Sumba/Sorong, resort accommodation (4-star minimum), all meals in Sumba, resort activities and guides, all liveaboard accommodation, all meals on the liveaboard, all diving (including guide, tank, weights), all snorkeling gear, and one evening presentation. Not included: international flights, visas, personal dive certification card, travel insurance (mandatory), alcoholic beverages beyond the welcome dinner, tips/gratuities, personal travel items, and domestic flights Bali-Tambolaka-Sorong (we handle booking, you pay separately—roughly $400 return).
The Sumba resort tier varies. Nihi Sumba runs $1,200/night and you get the full resort experience: spa, infinity pool, private beach access. Mid-range Sumba resorts run $500-700/night and still offer excellent food and guides. We customize. The liveaboard tier also varies—Fenides is $10,470/night full charter (up to 14 guests) or $800-1,000/night per cabin. Adelaar is $1,050-1,120/night per person, all-inclusive. Coralia is $6,975-7,750/night for full charter, roughly $500-650/night shared.
A realistic budget: $4,500-6,000/person for the full 14-day crossing if you go mid-range Sumba + shared liveaboard cabin. Premium (Nihi + Fenides charter) runs $12,000-15,000/person. That includes everything except flights and gratuities.
Seasonal Timing and Weather
Sumba and Raja Ampat have opposite seasons. Sumba’s dry season is May-October, when temperatures peak and Pasola happens in February-March before the rains. Raja Ampat’s best diving is October-April, when the sea is calmest. The crossing year-round is possible, but April-May and October-November are the sweet spots where both are in decent condition. June-September you’ll get good RA but Sumba will be greener and cooler. January-March you get Sumba at its cultural peak (Pasola) but RA sea states can be rougher.
Monsoon timing: November-March is the wet season for RA, but that doesn’t mean bad diving—it means variable weather, occasional rough mornings, and more frequent rain. December-January is peak Christmas/New Year season, so prices rise and availability drops across all properties in 2026. Book September-October for November-December crossing if you want Christmas-timed travel.
Comparing This to Separate Trips
You could book Sumba and Raja Ampat separately and save maybe 8-10% on accommodation. But you’d lose the through-planning, the guide consistency, and the logistics coordination that a Juara Holding Group managed crossing gives you. You’d also lose the narrative—the through-line that makes the journey feel like one story instead of two separate vacations. After 10+ years managing 50+ vessels and multiple resort partnerships, we’ve learned that the handoff between destinations is where most trips fall apart. People miss flights. Luggage gets lost. Guides don’t show up. We don’t let that happen.
Second comparison: this crossing vs. Raja Ampat only. If you’ve done Raja Ampat before and want something fresh, this crossing adds the cultural dimension that pure diving trips miss. If you’ve never dived and want to try, go RA-only first—our 7-day RA liveaboards are gentler and let you build skills. But if you’re an experienced diver who wants depth and breadth, Sumba + RA is the move.
