Raja Ampat Marine Life Guide – The World’s Richest Reef Ecosystem

Raja Ampat sits at the epicenter of the Coral Triangle—the global heart of marine biodiversity. With over 1,500 fish species (more than any equivalent area on Earth), 600+ hard coral species, and regular encounters with megafauna, every dive and snorkel reveals extraordinary marine life.

Megafauna

Manta Rays – Both oceanic and reef mantas frequent Manta Sandy and Blue Magic. Wingspans up to 5 meters. Peak season: November-April.

Reef Sharks – Whitetip, blacktip, and grey reef sharks patrol virtually every dive site. Baby reef sharks in shallow lagoons. Non-aggressive and habituated to divers.

Sea Turtles – Hawksbill and green sea turtles are common on most reefs. Nesting beaches on remote islands.

Whale Sharks – Occasional encounters, particularly in Cenderawasih Bay (adjacent to Raja Ampat). Seasonal appearance February-March.

Reef Fish Highlights

Napoleon wrasse, bumphead parrotfish (schools of 50+), schools of barracuda and jacks, batfish aggregations at Arborek jetty, sweetlips, groupers, angelfish, and the extraordinary pygmy seahorse (five species found in Raja Ampat).

Invertebrates

Octopus (blue-ring, mimic, coconut), cuttlefish, nudibranchs (200+ species documented), mantis shrimp, decorator crabs, and the famous walking shark (epaulette shark) found on night dives at The Passage.

Coral

75% of the world’s known coral species thrive here. Table corals spanning 5+ meters, massive barrel sponges, soft coral gardens in every color, and sea fans reaching 2+ meters height at sites like Friwen Wall.
