Fast-Paced Speedboat Tours in Raja Ampat — Thrills & Tropical Beauty

Over ten years operating in Raja Ampat, we’ve learned that some travelers want a meandering, contemplative sailing experience. Others want speed, exploration, and the exhilaration of island-hopping. Our 55-foot luxury speedboat, Explorer, exists for the latter group. We cruise at 22 knots (compared to our schooners’ graceful 8 knots), covering up to four snorkel sites per day instead of one or two. In a seven-day speedboat charter, you’ll visit 20+ distinct locations, experience 15–20 dives or snorkel sessions, explore island beaches most other tourists never see, and photograph wildlife most people miss. You’ll arrive home exhausted, exhilarated, and planning your return trip.

The Speedboat Advantage

Our Explorer is a custom-built Indonesian speedboat with a lightweight fiberglass hull, twin 250hp engines, and a modified interior to maximize comfort within a compact footprint. At 22 knots, we can transit between distant island groups in hours rather than days. On a seven-day schooner charter, you might anchor at two or three distinct locations and develop deep familiarity with each. On a seven-day speedboat charter, you’ll experience ten distinct anchorages, each with unique diving, marine life, and island culture. This isn’t superior—it’s different. If your priority is seeing and experiencing as much as possible in limited time, the speedboat is unbeatable.

Multiple Dive/Snorkel Sites Daily

Our standard speedboat itinerary includes 3–4 snorkel or dive sites per day. Morning departure (6am) → first site by 7am (2 hours in water) → second site by 10:30am (2 hours in water) → return to boat, lunch, rest → third site by 2pm (2 hours in water) → return to boat by 5pm, dinner, sleep. This pace yields 15–20 dives/snorkels per week, compared to 8–10 on a schooner. For serious divers and underwater photographers, this is paradise. You’re not rushing—each dive is leisurely and thorough. You’re simply covering more ground.

Exploring Remote Islands

Raja Ampat has 610 islands. Most charters (even schooners) explore the “circuit” islands—the famous, accessible ones. Our speedboat’s high speed and shallow draft allow us to reach islands most boats never visit. We’ve discovered caves with undocumented cave fish, isolated beaches where giant clams thrive unmolested, and island villages where tourists are still a rarity. Your photographer will have images nobody else has. Your naturalist guest will encounter species in their undisturbed habitat. Your adventurer will feel genuinely remote despite being a safe day trip from a mainland village.

Intimacy on a Smaller Vessel

With 12 guests instead of 16–18, our speedboat creates intimacy. Our crew of four knows every guest by name on day one. Conversations at dinner are deeper. You’re not one of a large group—you’re part of a tight expedition team. This works beautifully for friend groups, extended families, and corporate retreats where bonding is secondary to exploration. It’s the perfect size: large enough that you’re never alone, small enough that you feel like a cohesive unit.

Photography Paradise

Our Explorer was partially designed around underwater photography. We include on-deck drying racks for camera gear, we position dives near reefs where light penetration is optimal, and our captain deliberately slows for dramatic wildlife moments. We’ve hosted professional photographers from National Geographic, Getty Images, and freelancers building portfolio. We also welcome enthusiasts—anyone with an underwater camera gets premium positioning during dives and post-dive feedback from our dive master (who is also an accomplished underwater photographer).

Cabin Arrangements & Comfort

Our six private cabins feature queen or twin beds, private ensuite bathrooms (hot water), air conditioning, and portholes. Cabins are smaller than schooner cabins (efficiency of smaller vessel), but maintain full privacy and comfort. Each cabin accommodates two people. We don’t oversell—12 guests in 6 cabins, not 12 guests cramped into 4 cabins. You have genuine privacy and genuine comfort.

Meals & Provisioning

Our chef works with the same quality standards as our schooners. All meals, coffee, tea, and soft beverages included. We accommodate dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, allergies) with advance notice. Alcohol available at cost. On a speedboat, provisioning is more challenging (limited fresh water, smaller galley), so we focus on excellent quality rather than elaborate variety. Breakfast might be omelets and fresh tropical fruit. Lunch might be fresh ceviche and salads. Dinner might be grilled mahi-mahi with coconut rice. All delicious, all abundant, all precisely what you need after a day of diving.

Weather & Seasons

The speedboat operates in the same seasons as our schooners: January–May and September–November are ideal. The speedboat’s lighter weight and higher speed make it slightly more responsive to rough seas, so we’re cautious in July–August. We never operate during December or the rainy season. Our safety protocols are identical across all vessels.

Our fastest repeat customers are underwater photographers. One photographer chartered us four times in three years. She told us: “Every charter yields 500 unique photographs of undamaged reef, rare fish species, and wildlife moments that bigger boats never capture because they’re too slow or too noisy.” She’s now published a photo book featuring 60 images from her Raja Ampat speedboat trips. The speedboat made her book possible.

Logistics & Transportation

The speedboat departs from Sorong and returns to Sorong (8-hour flight from Jakarta). Guests fly Jakarta → Sorong, connect immediately to the boat, and spend 5–10 days exploring. Return journey: boat → Sorong → overnight in a hotel → flight to Jakarta. We coordinate all logistics, book flights, arrange airport transfers, and handle visas. You arrive, get on the boat, and go exploring.

FAQs

Is the speedboat uncomfortable at speed?

No. Our Explorer has a deep-vee hull designed to cut through swells rather than bounce over them. Cruising at 22 knots feels smooth, not chaotic. Guests frequently nap on the bow while we’re transit between islands. If seas get rough (rare during our operating season), we slow down—comfort always takes priority over schedule.

Do we cover the same diving areas as the schooners?

Mostly, plus additional remote locations. We visit the same world-class reefs (Cape Kri, The Passage, Arborek), but because we’re faster, we also reach deeper islands where fewer boats venture. You get a combination of famous sites and hidden gems.

Is there enough relaxation time, or is it non-stop activity?

We structure relaxation into the itinerary. Morning dive (6–9am), second dive (10am–1pm), lunch and rest (1–4pm), third dive (4–7pm), evening rest. Most guests nap 2–3 hours daily. We’re active, but we’re not punishing. Some guests request “extra chill” days where we anchor in a lagoon and do one dive, leaving afternoons free for reading, kayaking, or simply floating.

Can families with young children join?

Yes, though the speedboat is better suited for ages 8+. Younger children can join, but the longer transit times between islands and the boat’s motion require careful planning. We’ve had families with 10 and 12-year-olds who had extraordinary experiences. We recommend consulting with us about your children’s ages and comfort with water before booking.

What if someone gets seasick?

Rare, given our deep-vee hull and the smooth seas during our operating season. We carry seasickness medication and acupressure bands. Most guests adjust by day two. We also offer “chill” days in protected anchorages with minimal motion.

What’s the refund policy if I need to cancel?

Deposit of 50% required to secure dates. Cancellation 90+ days prior = full refund minus $2,500 administrative fee. Cancellation 30–90 days prior = 50% refund. Cancellation <30 days = no refund. Travel insurance highly recommended.

Can we rent the speedboat for a private expedition?

Yes. We’ve chartered Explorer exclusively to film crews, research groups, and private expeditions. Rates are negotiable based on group size and scope. Contact us for custom pricing.

What’s the best time to book?

January–March and September–November are peak season. Book 4–6 months in advance for your preferred dates. July–August is secondary season (occasional rough seas, but still excellent). We recommend avoiding December–June due to rainy season and reduced visibility.
